Tony Russell-Ward

Tony was responsible for starting the first Aikido dojo in Sheffield in the early 70s which then was
located at the Sheffield Judo Club on Bradfield Road in Hillsborough.  Later, during 1979, they moved to the Grindstone Public house at Crookes and it was in the February of that year that a young David Fielding and Nick Baker came to start Aikido.
The club was then called Sheffield Tomiki Aikido Club and had some 35 regular members and we met on a Tuesday night and a Saturday afternoon with the Police Dojo on a Wednesday evening which is still the case today.
The dojo has strong links with Japan and Tony regularly journeys there to further his own knowledge.
Tony has a personal Budo profile with a long list of prominent Japanese Sensei's suffice to say he has practiced Aikido for 36 years to date and Judo for 42 years.

We are a very friendly group and have a very good social scene. We don't
encourage people to just drop in and we insist that visitors phone before ,as we will turn people away who just turn up unannounced.  We believe it is bad etiquette.

THE ANCIENT SECRETS OF AIKIDO

by

SENTA YAMADA

This book contains everything an enthusiastic Aikidoka needs to know to guide them along the difficult path they have chosen.

It is a book not full of complicated techniques.  It is a book not full of mystery and jargon.  It is a book that emphasizes the necessity to study and understand the basics and in this it unlocks the clandestine aura which surrounds  the art of Aikido.  The book is a valuable addition to any Aikidoka collection and it cements the roots of the Tomiki system.  It includes the Foot & Hand movements, the Five Basic Hand-blade exercises and the Basic Fifteen.
